Lanco wins supercritical contract in Tamil Nadu

In 2013, in order to augment the state-owned power generation capacity, Tangedco had decided to set up three new power projects to generate 3,300 MW of power. The corporation planned to set up coal fired plants comprising five units of Ennore TPS expansion project, Ennore SEZ thermal power project and Udangudi thermal power project at an estimated cost of Rs. 20,000 crore. Of these five units, Ennore TPS expansion project would have a capacity of 660 MW, while Ennore SEZ thermal power project and Udangudi thermal power project would have two units of 660 MW each.
Tangedco secured all approvals including environmental clearance from the Ministry of Environment and Forests and Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board’s consent for establishing the project. The corporation has tied up with MMTC on a long-term basis for supply of 10 million tonnes of coal for these projects.
The Ennore TPS expansion project would be implemented within the premises of the existing station. The technical bids received for the ETPS expansion project were opened by the corporation on March 16, 2013.
The state government declared that total project cost of the ETPS expansion supercritical plant is estimated at Rs. 4,956 crore.
Lanco Infratech Ltd has emerged as the successful bidder for the Rs. 3,960-crore EPC contract. With this contract, the group’s order book now stands at Rs. 27,005 crore. The letter of intent would be issued shortly by Tangedco.
Ennore TPS has a total installed capacity of 450 MW comprising 2×60 MW and 3×110 MW units. The coal for the power plant is received from Mahanadhi coalfields Ltd (Talchar & IB Valley), Odisha, and Eastern Coalfields Ltd, Ranikanj, West Bengal.

L&T secures Rs.5,220 crore worth orders in two months.

Larsen and Toubro Ltd. (L&T) recently said it has secured new orders worth Rs. 5,220 crore across various business segments in January and February.

Of the total orders, the water and renewable energy business has secured orders of Rs. 2,019 crore and the buildings and factories business won orders for Rs. 1,461 crore.

"Although there is still sluggishness in our economy, these orders reflect that there is some positive movement in the infrastructure sector which augurs well for both the country and L&T going forward," S.N. Subrahmanyan, member of the board and senior vice-president (infrastructure and construction) at L&T.

L&T reported a 22% increase in fiscal third quarter net profit in January, helped by strong domestic and international order inflow.

At the same time, L&T slashed its forecast for growth in orders for the full fiscal year by 5 percentage points, citing an unpromising investment climate and policy uncertainty ahead of general elections due by May.

According to a report dated 5 January by the research division of Citigroup Global Markets Inc., private new projects announcements, at Rs. 19,100 crore in the third quarter of the year to March, fell 54% from a year earlier and 49% from the preceding three months.

"Historically, any major uptick in capital expenditure in India has been driven by the private sector. As a result, a sharp decline in private new project announcements continues to paint a dismal picture for capital expenditure," said the report.

Sterling Global Operations completes unexploded ordnance detection and clearance project for new Kurdistan oil and gas exploration

Thursday, Feb 27, 2014

LENOIR CITY, Tenn., Feb. 26, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Sterling Global Operations (SGO) has completed a project for Terraseis, a leading seismic survey contractor that specializes in acquiring land and transition zone surveys in challenging environments, to clear mines and other unexploded ordnance from areas within a 400-square-kilometer section of Kurdistan, Iraq in preparation for oil and gas exploration.

"This area of Kurdistan has potential for oil and natural gas production," said Matt Kaye, SGO's chief executive officer. "Terraseis chose SGO for this project because we've proven our ability to carry this type of work out successfully and within schedules that enable the client to perform its tasks quickly."

Kurdistan has seen a great deal of warfare, Kaye said, and economic development – such as oil and gas exploration – can only occur after safety precautions are taken.

"In the 1980s Iraq fought an eight-year war with Iran, and since 1991 the U.S. and its coalition partners have conducted Operation Desert Storm and Operation Iraqi Freedom," Kaye added. "That means high potential for unexploded ordnance in this area, and for the safety of its teams Terraseis chose SGO to find and remove those threats."

The area cleared was located close to the city of Sulaymaniyah, Kurdistan, near the Iraq-Iran border about 200 miles northeast of Baghdad, Iraq's capital city.

Terraseis, headquartered in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, provides data acquisition services to international exploration and production companies in the Middle East, Asia and Africa, with its most recent focus in the Middle East.

Sterling Global Operations is an employee-owned stability operations company employing approximately 3,500 professionals worldwide. The company serves customers with munitions response; intelligence support; logistics; security operations and other services in some of the world's most austere and hostile environments. Ichthys LNG Project celebrates FPSO keel laying

Friday, Feb 21, 2014

The INPEX-operated Ichthys LNG Project has celebrated a key milestone for its Floating Production, Storage and Offloading (FPSO) facility.

The first block of the keel was placed during a ceremony in the Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) shipyard in Okpo, South Korea, where the FPSO is being constructed.

Speaking at the event, Managing Director Ichthys Project Louis Bon said the keel laying was significant as it is the structure around which the FPSO would take form.

"In a year that will see many major milestones for the Ichthys LNG Project, this is a very big moment," he said.

"The FPSO is the facility that will be used for condensate dewatering, stabilisation, storage and export – so its importance cannot be overstated.

"With only a few years until first production, all of our major offshore facilities are taking shape."

Following tradition and placing a newly minted Australian gold coin under the keel block for good luck, Mr Bon said the milestone was the major next step in bringing together the fabricated blocks of the FPSO.

In traditional shipbuilding, keel laying was celebrated because it signified that work was starting on a vessel. In the case of Ichthys, modular construction means that most pieces of the FPSO will have been incorporated in blocks before keel laying, for faster sequencing.

These blocks will be combined to create mega blocks, which are then lifted, skidded and welded at the DSME dock to form parts of the FPSO and are outfitted and erected separately.

Once complete, the facility will be towed 5,600 km to the Ichthys Field in the Browse Basin, offshore Western Australia, where it will be permanently moored to the seabed for the life of the Project.

The 336m by 59m FPSO is designed to hold more than one million barrels of condensate, which will be offloaded periodically to crude oil tankers and shipped directly to market.

Work is underway for all major Ichthys LNG Project offshore facilities, including the Central Processing Facility, subsea structures and the Gas Export Pipeline.

Dual-OS running Geeksphone Revolution now on sale

The most prominent smartphone manufacturer in Spain, Geeksphone, has officially released its dual-OS running Revolution smartphone.

The hansdet features a 4.7-inch IPS display alongside a dual-core 1.6 GHz Intel Atom processor, 4GB of expandable internal memory, 1GB of RAM, and a 8MP primary camera alongside a 1.3MP front-facer. All of this is powered by a 2,000 mAh battery.
According to Geeksphone, the dual-booting Revolution will let you switch between Android and Mozilla's browser-centric Firefox OS with a simple 1-touch system. There're also indications that the smartphone will be able to run other mobile OSs as well.
Hopefully Firefox OS will have smoothed out the numerous rough edges we saw on the Geeksphone Peak at last year's MWC, where sluggish performance and slow app switching overshadowed the benefits of the OS.
The Geeksphone Revolution is on sale directly from Geeksphone's site for €222 with worldwide shipping available.

Petrofac awarded Khazzan CPF project in Sultanate of Oman

Thursday, Feb 20, 2014

Petrofac, the international oil and gas services provider, has been awarded a contract by BP, worth approximately US$1.2 billion, for the central processing facility (CPF) for the Khazzan gas project in the Sultanate.  This has been awarded on a convertible lump sum basis and will convert to a full lump sum contract at a pre-determined point during execution.

The scope of work will include engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) of the central processing facility (CPF) at the Khazzan field.  The CPF will include two process trains, each having a capacity of 525 million standard cubic feet of gas per day.  The project also includes an associated condensate processing system, power generation plant, water treatment system and all associated utilities and infrastructure.  The project is expected to be completed in 2017.

Subramanian Sarma, Managing Director of Petrofac's Onshore Engineering & Construction business, commented:  “Petrofac has executed a large number of projects for BP across many aspects of our business and we are delighted to be supporting them on this pioneering project at Khazzan, the largest new upstream project in Oman.  We have a very strong record for project execution in Oman with this project representing Petrofac’s eighth EPC contract in the Sultanate and follows the recent award of the US$2.1 billion Sohar refinery improvement project which was announced in November.  Furthermore, consistent with our commitment to developing Omani in-country value whilst also providing opportunity for local content wherever we work, we will also seek to do so for the duration of this contract via the supply chain and recruitment of local resources.”

LATEST MECHANICAL ENGINEERING NEWS

The World’s Largest Solar Plant is Frying Birds

The world’s largest solar power plant, the Ivanpah Solar Electric Generating System, officially opened for business a few days ago, but not all environmentalists are happy about it. The plant consists of 350,000 mirrors spread across 5 square miles, and it works by concentrating sunlight to boil water in a series of enormous towers hooked up to steam generators. That incredible amount of heat does more than just generate power, however; it also fries any birds that happen to fly over the plant.

This has actually been a known side effect of this type of solar plant from the start, and it’s a concern that may keep similar projects from being approved in the US. The air above the plant can reach temperatures up to 1,000 degrees Fahrenheit (537 Celsius), and the reflective surface of the mirrors resembles a lake, which biologists say could end up luring birds to their deaths.

The way the plant scorches birds is horrifying, but the California Energy Commission believes the loss of wildlife — about eleven birds a month — is a price worth paying for 140,000 sustainably-powered homes. While any loss of life is upsetting, the fact of the matter is it’s a drop in the bucket compared to the number of birds killed by other forms of human infrastructure: an estimated minimum of 300 million birds a year are killed simply by colliding into buildings. Even domesticated cats kill far greater numbers of birds each year. And other forms of clean energy can be just as problematic as the tower solar plants, with wind turbines killing at least 10,000 birds a year (some of them bald eagles ).

No power generating system that harms wildlife is ideal, but this type of solar plant is still vastly less harmful to birds than the alternatives. After all, coal-fired plants harm more than a handful of birds each month — they release greenhouse gasses and toxic pollutants, warming the planet and making people and animals near the plants ill. Unlike a nuclear power plant, the catastrophic failure of a solar plant won’t leave the surrounding area tainted with radioactivity for decades or centuries to come. It’s likely the Ivanpah plant will remain controversial due to the bird death toll, but in the grand scheme of things, it’s far less damaging to the environment than the other energy sources we’re already using.

Friday, Feb 14, 2014

Jacobs Engineering Group Inc. (NYSE:JEC) announced today that its AJS joint venture with AMEC and Stork has secured a contract extension to continue providing integrated services to the Shell ONEgas Southern North Sea (SNS) asset base.

“We are pleased to deliver value to this significant asset base. The contract extension builds on our long-term relationship with Shell and NAM in Europe; and we are delighted to work with our joint venture partners to provide excellent and safe services that drive continuous business improvements for ONEgas.”

Company officials did not disclose the contract value but noted that it includes a base period of five years, plus a further five-year option period.

Shell ONEgas is a combined business unit of Shell UK Exploration & Production (Shell) and the Nederlandse Aardolie Maatschappij B.V. (NAM).

Under the terms of the contract, AJS is providing integrated engineering and project management services for maintenance, modifications and capital projects. The work is executed offshore on 54 assets in the Southern North Sea, and onshore at gas plants in Bacton in the UK and Den Helder in the Netherlands. Approximately 1,250 personnel are employed by the joint venture across the assets, and from office locations in Great Yarmouth, UK, and Leiden, Netherlands. Working as an integrated team, the AJS joint venture has successfully delivered multiple services for Shell ONEgas since 2003.

In making the announcement, Jacobs Group Vice President Mark Bello said, “We are pleased to deliver value to this significant asset base. The contract extension builds on our long-term relationship with Shell and NAM in Europe; and we are delighted to work with our joint venture partners to provide excellent and safe services that drive continuous business improvements for ONEgas.”
